Principal's Message
Welcome to the Somerville Elementary School website!

Somerville Elementary School is a dynamic learning community with a population of  over 400 students in grades kindergarten through five. Upon entering the school, it is clear that Somerville is a school where everyone is valued. In addition to spending time learning together, the staff, students and families play together and develop lifelong relationships. It is truly a special world here at Somerville. Parents and teachers work together to provide an academically challenging curriculum and culturally rich environment through a varied selection of materials, field trips and assemblies for all of our children.  Our goal is for each student to leave Somerville with a strong academic foundation, a zest for learning and a caring heart.

Our curriculum is intended to encourage curious and independent learners.  Children are immersed in a world of literature; we focus on developing each student's ability to read alongside their desire to read!  Our language arts curriculum emphasizes a reading and writing workshop model approach.  The math curriculum is distinguished by its opportunities for open-ended, hands-on exploration of math concepts alongside traditional written experiences.  Social studies and science are taught in an inquiry-based program and STEAM is a newer piece of our program, allowing students the opportunity to bring together various disciplines to deepen their understanding of the world around them.

Each grade level has weekly art, music, physical education and media classes taught by skilled specialists.  A full array of basic skills instruction and special education services are offered by specialized instructors to support the individualized learning needs of our students.  It is our priority to support the development of the whole child, and to reach each child where they are, through our rich programs.

On the website we have included essential information for parents and visitors to become better acquainted with Somerville School. Parents are encouraged to refer to the online  Family Handbook. Many of your questions will be answered as you review this information. Also, the school calendar highlights important school events, and there are many!

We encourage you to get involved in Team Somerville and welcome you to our special community full of engaged and happy learners.
