The Somerville HSA strives to enhance the already outstanding curriculum at Somerville School through the addition of assemblies, author visits, and classroom improvements which benefit all of our students during their time at Somerville. In addition to curriculum based enhancements, we organize fun events for your entire family such as Lip Sync, Bingo Night, the Back to School Picnic and International Night. We also plan creative ways to thank and acknowledge our wonderful teachers and Somervlle staff throughout the year with luncheons, sweet surprises and appreciation events.

 Together we will:

* Promote social activities that heighten school spirit, encourage family togetherness and promote humanitarian efforts within our community.

*  Encourage and organize volunteer support for School and HSA events & programs.

* Provide support for cultural and educational programs at Somerville.

* Conduct purposeful fundraising to support programs, classroom enhancements and community events at the school.

* Nurture an environment where all are welcomed to present new ideas, offer feedback and opinions.

The HSA is thrilled to announce that we will be hosting 2 programs!

The first one will take place on January 22nd (parents only) and the second will be February 6th (parent and child) both at 7 pm.  Details about the program are below:

We all know that there are times children struggle with the demands of their busy lives and can sometimes feel overwhelmed. But, did you know that chronic stress and anxiety among our youth is rising rapidly and is at an all time high in this country? For some children, feelings of frustration, overwhelm or fear is more prevalent than feelings of joy, calm and safety. Children in various ways may express states of stress and anxiety. Some exhibit highly reactive behavior, for others; there are episodes of disconnection and shutting down. Unfortunately, this can become debilitating to your child’s well being and happiness while undermining their success in and out of school.

Mindful practices of breath, movement and focused attention have been proven to help children (and adults) of all ages reset their nervous system and build their inner capacity to cope and calm. Through the shared engagement of simple, short exercises, you can become the best model of how to strengthen inner resilience so that you and your child can meet the daily challenges from a place of greater ease and joy.

You can help them develop essential inner resources to tap into their truest potential. Mindful practices can help children become resilient in the face of their fears, strong in the wake of their personal challenges and brave in the midst of adversity. We are all are born to thrive, not simply survive. Join us and learn techniques that you can share with children of all ages and use for yourself as well.

In this workshop, you will discover how you can support your child’s ability to:
• Calm themselves when feeling overwhelmed
• Understand how their mind works so that they can create their own shifts in thinking
• Manage strong emotions
• Build resilience and confidence (Although things can seem “hard,” your child can develop the tools to know that, “They can do hard things.”)
