Debate Club

Elementary school students brilliantly observe the world that surrounds them. They are keen to know what's true, what's reliable and what's good. As much as they are focused on their own needs and ideas, they are mightily curious about what they don't know.

That kind of innate drive and power allows them to be unstoppable and unquenchable when provided the right circumstances.

A Debate program that taps into this dynamic will be offered by Somerville Elementary School this April and May. Open to any student in grades three through five, students will learn under close supervision:

  • how to learn more about thoughtful topics
  • how to recognize and build an argument or a claim based on evidence
  • how to speak on their feet with confidence and clarity
  • how to rebut opposing claims in a debate and how to rebuild their own arguments
  • how to take notes and how to write out an organized claim/argument
  • how to ask and answer questions briefly and to the point

Most importantly--and amazingly--this can all happen in a spirit of high fun and good-natured collaboration and competition. And--fingers crossed--even in a twice-weekly program a great deal of fun and camaraderie can make the time absolutely zip past.

Under the guidance of a long-time middle and high school speech and debate coach (Jim Shapiro) allied with the deft assistance of Ms. Bielicky and Ms. Mariotti sessions will run from April 13 through May 21 Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3 to 4:15 pm.  Please click here to access the flyer and instructions on how to join.
